Look, the book was OK, but…its the worst book Ive ever read. Its not even original, Its a reteeling of Romeo and Juliet. The plot twists is really bad and predictable. COME ON PEOPLE! DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT ITS REALISTIC. I MEAN, BY COINCIDENCE, SHE JUST HAPPENS TO– I DONT WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY. If your curious and bored enough, read the book. Even 10 year-olds can see that this is not realistic, Phil Pullman is a fairy tale writer and he should stick to that By the way, the sex scene is not that shocking, its just plain..let me put it this way, it was written by a horny, bald, peverted 40 year old man.

…Basically I think that this book was way to simple. I dunno if I was dazed while I was reading or what, but there were a lot of detailes and complexity that was missing. The whole book was kinda boring and kinda pointless as well. Im very disapointed of Philip Pullman because all of his other books (the ones that I’ve read anyway) were brilliant and this one just wasn’t up to par.

I have read many of Philip Pullmans other books, so I must say that my expectations for this were high and perhaps that’s why I gave it such a low rating.
The whole atmosphere of this book was that of a drugstore mystery, one that is just on the shelf and nobody really buys it. The story is about a guy, Chris, that sees a girl and it is just love at first sight. Usually, if it were written right, this would definitely be a book that I would enjoy. But Philip Pullman just did not pull off what he had in his other books, perhaps it was writers block. One thing about this book is that it does not convince me that Chris and Jennys (the girl Chris loves) are truly in love. There are moments when you think, “Hey, this could be pretty interesting.” But it turns out just being a false alarm. Another disappointment is that nothing is really a surprise, I guessed everything that was set up as if it should be a surprise and that totally took away from the book.
All in all, I do not recommend this book but I do recommend Philip Pullmans other books, especially the His Dark Materials series (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass). I suggest finding a better book than this to spend your time reading.

This book has to be one of my favorites. I haven’t read Pullman before until i spotted the book at Kepler’s. The character of Chris Marshall is the poster boy of lovelorn young men and Jenny is a riot grrl. The book is enchanting and very well written. The plot has many unsuspecting twists and suspenseful chapters. Not only is it a thriller, it’s a beautifully written love story. This should be read by everyone!
